Jumping from Shin Bashi in the centre of town into the Yoshida River is a time honoured past-time of local children who know how and when to jump safely. VISITORS SHOULD NEVER ATTEMPT TO JUMP. Jumping without proper experience and guidance can be fatal.
The cool waters of the Nagara and Yoshida Rivers are a summer playground for locals and visitors alike. These cool fast running rivers, and the surrounding valley, offer some exciting things to do, and a welcome chance to cool off during the warm summer months.
The nearby Meiho area offers winter sports enthusiasts excellent ski and snowboard facilities suitable for all skill levels. The LG FIS Snowboard World Cup 2009 was held here.
River rafting enthusiasts can enjoy an exciting white water ride down the Nagara river. Nagara River Rafing Big Smile Tours offers daily white water rafting experiences that are especially enjoyable, and popular on hot summer days. See Nagara River Rafting Big Smile's YouTube video here.

Ayu fishing is a traditional summer past-time. Fisherman, both local and from all over Japan, take to the rivers to cool off, relax, and test their skill at catching this delicious fresh water delicacy. Fresh ayu is available only in the summer, and can be enjoyed grilled in many restaurants and ryokans around Gujo Hachiman from June until late September.
For a truly unique experience, wade into the Nagara or Yoshida River and try your luck at catching your dinner! (A permit is required but easily obtained!).
